Basic Overview
Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital (TMUCIH) is a national Grade A tertiary cancer hospital integrating medical treatment, teaching, research, prevention and health care. It is the birthplace of oncology in China and one of the largest and most influential cancer prevention and treatment bases in the country. Affiliated with Tianjin Medical University, it is under the supervision of the Tianjin Municipal Health Commission.
History
The hospital's history dates back to 1861, originating as a British Army military clinic in Tianjin. It was later renamed the London Missionary Society Clinic (1868), London Missionary Society Hospital (1879), and Dr. Mackenzie Memorial Hospital (1924). After the founding of the People's Republic of China, it was taken over and renamed Tianjin Municipal People's Hospital.
In 1952, Prof. Jin Xianzhai established China's first oncology department here. It was officially named Tianjin Cancer Hospital in 1986, became an affiliated hospital of Tianjin Medical University in 1997, and adopted its current full name in 2014.
